Event Details

In celebration of Fenway Park’s 100th Anniversary, Blackstone's of Beacon Hill and Boston’s Hill House Community Center will team up and take the field on Saturday, May 5th for the Hill House’s 6th Annual Backyard Dash. Blackstone’s will be hosting renowned New England children's book author and illustrator Matt Tavares who will be on hand to sign his newest book – THERE GOES TED WILLIAMS: The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived, as well as his other acclaimed picture books. Festivities will run from noon to 3:30pm on the Esplanade (Fiedler Field). Attendees can enter to win (suggested donation $5) two of Mr. Tavares’ autographed illustrations from his other well known book, Zachary’s Ball. Proceeds from the two drawings will go to the Hill House Scholarship Fund and annual Swings for Scholarships Baseball Game. In addition, Wally – the Boston Red Sox Mascot – will be on hand for photographs from 12:30 to 1:30pm.

Matt Tavares is the author-illustrator of Oliver’s Game, Mudball, and Henry Aaron’s Dream, and the illustrator of Over the River and Through the Woods, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Gingerbread Pirates by Kristin Kladstrup, and Lady Liberty: A Biography by Doreen Rappaport. He lives in Ogunquit, Maine.
